A Google Business Profile for hospitals is the free listing that appears on Google Maps and in the map results when someone searches "hospital near me", "cardiologist in Kochi" or your hospital's name. To get it right, a hospital needs one accurate main profile per location, the correct primary category, separate profiles only for departments and doctors that meet Google's eligibility rules, a steady flow of genuine reviews with replies, real photos, and tracking so you know how many calls and direction requests the profile produces.

For many hospitals and clinics, the Business Profile produces more patient calls than the website. This guide covers everything from categories to suspension risks.

Why Google Business Profile matters so much for hospitals

When a patient searches with local intent, Google shows a map with three highlighted businesses (the "local pack") above the regular results. Patients call, get directions or open WhatsApp directly from that panel, often without visiting a website.

Three things decide whether you appear, according to Google's own help documentation on local ranking: relevance (how well the profile matches the search), distance (how far the searcher is from you) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and links). You cannot change distance. You can strongly influence relevance and prominence.

Step 1: Claim, verify and clean up

  1. Search for your hospital on Google Maps. Check whether a profile already exists, including duplicates created by patients or old staff.
  2. Claim the profile with a hospital-owned Google account, not a staff member's personal email. Add at least two owners from management.
  3. Complete verification. Google may ask for a video showing your signage, the inside of the building and proof of management.
  4. Search for duplicates (old names, "Hospital Casualty", former addresses) and ask Google to merge or remove them.

Keep a simple register of who has access. When a marketing executive or agency leaves, remove their access the same day.

Step 2: Choose the right categories

The primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Choose the one that describes the whole business.

Type of facilityLikely primary categoryPossible secondary categories
Multispecialty hospitalHospital or Private hospitalEmergency room, Medical Center
Eye hospitalEye care center or Eye hospitalOphthalmologist, LASIK surgeon
Dental clinicDental clinic or DentistCosmetic dentist, Orthodontist
IVF centreFertility clinicObstetrician-gynecologist
Ayurveda hospitalAyurvedic clinicHospital (only if accurate)
Diagnostic centreMedical laboratory or Diagnostic centerMedical clinic

Category names change and vary by language and region, so start typing in the category field and pick from what Google offers. Only add secondary categories that are true. Adding unrelated categories to rank for more searches can backfire.

Step 3: Business information that must be exact

  • Name: Your real-world name exactly as on your signboard and legal documents. Do not add keywords, locations or taglines ("XYZ Hospital, Best Cardiac Care Kochi"). This is one of the most common reasons for suspension.
  • Address: The full address with a landmark. Make sure the pin is on the right entrance.
  • Phone: A number that is answered 24 hours if you list 24-hour emergency. A local landline or a dedicated mobile both work; use the same number on your website.
  • Hours: Separate hours for OP, emergency and pharmacy if they differ. Use the "More hours" options where available. Update special hours for Onam, Christmas and other holidays.
  • Website: Link to the homepage or a location page, not a generic social profile.
  • Description: Plain description of your specialties and services. No phone numbers, links, prices, calls to action or promotional claims.
  • Attributes: Wheelchair access, parking and other attributes Google offers for your category.

Step 4: Departments and doctor listings (Google's rules)

This is where most hospitals get confused. Google's guidelines allow some departments and individual practitioners to have their own profiles, but with conditions.

Department profiles

Google's guidelines say departments within hospitals may have their own profiles if they are publicly facing as distinct entities. In practice, a department is more likely to qualify if it has:

  • A name that is distinct from the main hospital and other departments.
  • Its own category that differs from the main hospital (for example, "Emergency room", "Radiologist", "Pharmacy", "Medical laboratory").
  • Its own phone number and, ideally, its own entrance or clearly separate public area.
  • Hours that may differ from the main hospital.

Good candidates in many hospitals: emergency department, pharmacy, diagnostic laboratory, imaging centre, and a separately branded centre such as a fertility or cancer centre. Avoid creating a profile for every clinical department in the OP block; Google may treat these as duplicates.

Google My Business for doctors: practitioner profiles

Many doctors still call it Google My Business, the product's name before Google renamed it Google Business Profile in 2021. The rules are the same. Google's guidelines allow individual practitioners such as doctors to have their own profiles if they are public-facing and directly contactable at the verified location during stated hours. Key points:

  • Name the profile with the doctor's name (for example, "Dr Anita Thomas"), not the hospital's name, which would duplicate the hospital profile.
  • A practitioner should have one profile for that location, not separate ones for each specialty.
  • Where a doctor is the only practitioner at a branded clinic, Google recommends a single profile, sometimes in the form "Brand: Doctor name".
  • When a doctor leaves, the profile can be marked as moved or the hospital can request changes, but it does not simply disappear. Plan for this before creating many doctor profiles.

Should you create doctor profiles?

There is a trade-off. Doctor profiles can appear for specialty searches such as "neurologist near me" and give patients a doctor's accurate timings and contact details. But they also split reviews across many listings and need ongoing management. Many hospitals create profiles only for senior consultants who see OP patients regularly and are likely to stay. Keep each practitioner profile factual (name, qualifications, registration, timings), because the NMC's October 2026 guidelines bar promotional portrayal of individual doctors in hospital communication and bar doctors from engaging third parties to market their services.

Read Google's current Business Profile guidelines before creating any additional profile, because the rules and their enforcement change.

Step 5: Services, products and booking

  • Services: List each major service (angioplasty, knee replacement, cataract surgery, master health check-up) with a factual description. Avoid prices unless they are accurate and kept up to date.
  • Products: Some hospitals use this section for health check-up packages. Keep inclusions clear.
  • Appointment link: Add a link to your online booking page or WhatsApp booking. Some booking systems integrate with Google directly; ask your software provider.

Google has retired some features over time, including the built-in chat in 2024, and it has been winding down the public questions-and-answers section (its API closed in November 2025). Google's AI answers in Maps draw on reviews and web content, so accurate descriptions, services and review replies matter even more.

Step 6: Photos and videos

Patients look at photos to judge cleanliness and quality. Upload:

  • Exterior from the main road, so people recognise the building.
  • Entrance, reception and parking.
  • Rooms (general ward, private room, ICU waiting area).
  • Key equipment with a short caption.
  • Teams at work (with staff consent; never photos in which a patient can be identified).
  • Short videos: a walk from the gate to reception, or a doctor explaining when to visit the emergency department.

Add new photos when something changes, such as a renovated ward, new equipment or a new entrance. Remove misleading photos uploaded by others by flagging them.

Step 7: Posts

Posts appear on your profile and can answer patients' questions. Google's own list of ways to improve local ranking does not mention posts, so post when you have something useful to say, for example:

  • Health awareness posts tied to the calendar (World Heart Day, monsoon fever precautions, Ramadan fasting tips for diabetics).
  • New doctor or department announcements.
  • Health camp dates and locations.
  • Check-up package updates.

Keep posts educational and factual. Use the "Call now" button rather than typing phone numbers, email addresses or social media handles into a post; Google says it may remove posts with unverified contact information. Avoid claims, testimonials and before-after images; the same advertising rules for hospitals in India apply here. Any post or video that features a doctor should show the doctor's name, qualifications, registration status and registration number (for medical doctors, the SMR/NMR number from the State or National Medical Register).

Step 8: Reviews

Reviews are the most visible part of your profile and a factor in prominence. Ask every patient, at the right moment, with a direct review link. Reply to every review in a way that does not reveal any patient's health information. Never offer incentives and never filter requests to only happy patients; both are against Google's policies. Our full guide on how to get more Google reviews for a hospital covers scripts and reply templates.

Step 9: Avoid suspension and spam problems

Hospital profiles get suspended more often than people expect. Common causes:

  • Keywords in the business name.
  • Multiple profiles for the same location and service.
  • Changing many details at once (name, address, category) without documentation.
  • Virtual or unstaffed addresses, such as a "clinic" profile at a doctor's home that does not see patients.
  • Reviews posted from the hospital's own network or by staff in bulk.

If suspended, do not create a new profile. Fix the issue, gather evidence (signage photos, registration certificate, utility bill) and submit a reinstatement request.

Competitors sometimes edit your details or post fake reviews. Check your profile every few days and reject wrong "suggested edits" promptly, because Google may publish an edit that the owner has not rejected within a few days. Report spam listings using Google's redressal form.

Step 10: Track what the profile brings in

The Business Profile performance view shows searches, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Add UTM parameters to your website link so visits from the profile show separately in Google Analytics. For calls, a dedicated tracked number helps, as long as your main number appears as an additional number and stays consistent across the web.

Review monthly:

MetricWhat it tells you
CallsDirect patient intent
Direction requestsPatients planning to visit
Website and booking clicksInterest in specific services
Search termsWhat people found you for
Review count and average ratingTrust and prominence

A monthly checklist

  • Hours and holiday hours correct.
  • Posts published when there was useful news or education.
  • New photos added for anything that has changed.
  • Every review replied to.
  • Suggested edits checked.
  • Duplicates and spam checked.
  • Performance numbers recorded.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free for hospitals?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Costs only arise if you pay for ads, photography or someone to manage it for you.

Can each doctor in a hospital have a Google Business Profile?

Google allows individual practitioners to have profiles if they are public-facing and contactable at the verified location during stated hours. Each doctor should have one profile per location, named after the doctor. Consider the trade-off of splitting reviews and the work of managing many profiles.

Can hospital departments have separate Google listings?

Departments that operate as distinct public-facing entities, with their own name, category and phone number, can have their own profiles under Google's guidelines. Emergency, pharmacy, laboratory and separately branded centres are common examples. Creating profiles for every OP department usually leads to duplicates.

Why was our hospital's Google Business Profile suspended?

Common causes are keywords in the business name, duplicate profiles, sudden changes to name or address, and suspicious review activity. Fix the cause, collect evidence such as signage photos and registration documents, and submit a reinstatement request rather than creating a new profile.

How do we rank higher on Google Maps for "hospital near me"?

Choose the correct primary category, keep information accurate and consistent across the web, add services and photos, and earn genuine reviews with thoughtful replies. A strong website with location and specialty pages also helps. Distance from the searcher always matters, so you will rank best close to your location.

Should we reply to every Google review?

Yes. Replies show patients you are listening, and Google's AI answers in Maps draw on reviews. Never confirm that the reviewer was a patient or mention any health details in your reply.
